That season was good for 8.2 bWAR, but New York’s Ron Guidry unanimously won the Cy Young that year after going 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA, 208 ERA+ and 9.6 bWAR while striking out 248 batters (compared to Caldwell’s 131) and throwing 9 complete game shutouts.Ĭaldwell was one of two Brewers to get MVP votes in 1978, with Larry Hisle being the other. Mike Caldwell nearly won a Cy Young award in his first full year in Milwaukee, going 22-9 with a 2.36 ERA (2.94 FIP) with 23 complete games - and one save for good measure. That Brewers squad combined a potent offense with one of the best pitchers in baseball that year. Unfortunately, it came in a top-heavy American League East, which saw the Yankees beat the Red Sox in a Game 163 you may have heard about to finish at 100-63, while Boston finished 99-64. The ‘78 Brewers finished the year 93-69, by far the best season to that point in their short history. The 1978 Brewers not only brought a winning team to Milwaukee for the first time since the Braves’ final year in 1965, but also brought the first 90-win season in 20 years. That title belongs to a group that came together less than 10 years after the franchise was born. Thanks to the constant reminders of the 1982 team, a lot of younger fans may not realize that it wasn’t the organization’s first extremely good team. So here’s a closer look at some of those teams who just missed out on a chance to compete for a title. After all, there’s plenty of near-misses in the local nine’s history, especially during those long years between playoff appearances in 19. We’ll expand it a bit further and look at the best Brewers teams to never make the playoffs. We’ve been asked to dive into that topic and share the best Brewers teams that fit that mold, but since there have been precious few Brewers teams to even fit that description (1982, 20, there, done), we thought we’d take a different tact. 512 winning percentage.īaseball Almanac is pleased to present a unique set of rosters not easilyįound on the Internet. This week, SB Nation wanted to know which teams were the best to never win a championship across every sport. Legends vary on exactly what powers the unicorn held. Did unicorns, at one point, actually exist? If they didn’t, then where did the legend of this magical horse with one horn come from?įor the uninitiated, unicorns are mythical creatures that possess a single horn protruding from it’s forehead. But unicorns have been discussed and given mythical status for centuries now, in religious texts, travel observations, and even ancient academic papers. (What, he wasn’t good enough to get 18 hole-in-ones?) So, it’s fair for this outrageous claim to be taken as such. After all, this was the same news agency that reported former leader Kim Jong Il invented the hamburger and had eleven hole-in-ones the first time he ever hit the links. Like many supposed news reports that comes out of North Korea these days, this reported evidence that a mythical creature like the unicorn once existed was mostly ignored and laughed at by the world’s science community. The unicorn’s grave was located under a rock near the North Korea capital of Pyongyang with an engraving that read “Unicorn’s Lair.” On November 30, 2012, the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea’s government “news” agency, reported that scientists had “reconfirmed” the existence and location of the final resting place of the unicorn ridden by King Dongmyeong, the founding father of Goguryeo of an ancient Korean kingdom. 12/10/2023 0 Comments Vintage baseball pinball machineIt already has a spring mechanism to propel the ball, 100 years before Montague Redgrave's patent. Late 18th century: Spring launcher invented Billard japonais, Alsace, France c. The tabletop versions of these games became the ancestors of modern pinball. The evolution of outdoor games finally led to indoor versions that could be played on a table, such as billiards, or on the floor of a pub, like bowling and shuffleboard. Croquet, golf and pall-mall eventually derived from ground billiards variants. Games played outdoors by rolling balls or stones on a grass course, such as bocce or bowls, eventually evolved into various local ground billiards games played by hitting the balls with sticks and propelling them at targets, often around obstacles. The origins of pinball are intertwined with the history of many other games. History Pre-modern: Development of outdoor and tabletop ball games The biggest pinball machine manufacturers historically include Bally Manufacturing, Gottlieb, Williams Electronics and Stern Pinball.Ĭurrently active pinball machine manufacturers include Stern Pinball, Jersey Jack Pinball, American Pinball, Chicago Gaming Company, Pinball Brothers, Haggis Pinball, Dutch Pinball, Spooky Pinball and Multimorphic, Inc., as well as several smaller boutique manufacturers. Most pinball machines use one ball per turn (except during special multi-ball phases), and the game ends when the ball(s) from the last turn are lost. The game's object is generally to score as many points as possible by hitting these targets and making various shots with flippers before the ball is lost. Today, pinball is most commonly an arcade game in which the ball is fired into a specially designed cabinet known as a pinball machine, hitting various lights, bumpers, ramps, and other targets depending on its design. Historically the board was studded with nails called 'pins' and had hollows or pockets which scored points if the ball came to rest in them. Pinball games are a family of games in which a ball is propelled into a specially designed table where it bounces off various obstacles, scoring points either en route or when it comes to rest. Not all the features stare you in the face, but they aren't exactly hidden either.įor example, a natural language feature lets you type simple due dates, such as "tomorrow" or "today." When Wunderlist understands what you mean, it underlines the word and has a little animation that indicates it's now saved. Use either Slack or Wunderlist for a few hours, and you'll peel back layers of functionality that somehow never clutter the screen. Families who like to share chore lists or shopping lists will find that Wunderlist gets the job done handily.Įxploring Wunderlist reminds me of how it feels to get started with the team messaging app Slack in that the presentation is almost deceptively simple. You can collaborate with other people by inviting them to any list you like. You can also add a star to tasks there's a filter in the app's left menu bar to view all tasks with a star. Next, you add a few items, which are the same as "tasks" or "to-dos." Every item can have a name, due date, reminder, subtasks, assignee, comments, and attachments. When you first set up an account, the app even suggests some lists to get you started, such as Work, Private, and Movies to Watch. For example, you might have lists for Grocery Shopping, Chores, and Travel Planning that are all grouped into the Household folder. You begin by creating lists for your to-dos, which you can group into folders. Intuitive options and menu selections make it easy to get started right after creating an account. Wunderlist looks straightforward to use, and it is. If you use Wunderlist now, it's free and you get everything that was formerly behind the paywall. Microsoft stopped billing people for the Pro service some time ago, even though I still found that Wunderlist's Pro page and calls to upgrade still exist in the app and on the website. Now it just has a free service that includes all the features that used to be Pro. Wunderlist used to have a free tier of service and a paid Pro service. When a kill date is finally set, you can see whether Microsoft To-Do is a suitable alternative or whether it's time to migrate to something else. Certainly, Microsoft will give you some warning before retiring the app for good, and you might as well stick with it if it does what you need. Third, and most important of all, Microsoft could yank Wunderlist away from you at any time.Įxisting Wunderlist users: If you're still happy with Wunderlist, I recommend you keep using it until you feel ready to switch. Second, there are better to-do apps that have kept pace with change and offer a better experience. I have three reasons for dissuading you from creating a new account and starting fresh with Wunderlist at this stage. You sign up by logging in to any account from Microsoft, or by using a Google or Facebook account as the authenticator. If you don't have a Wunderlist account already, you can still create a new one, if you want it. The problem is Wunderlist is now four years behind its competition, and time is of the essence. If To-Do does manage to one day capture all the best features from Wunderlist, that could be great. Microsoft To-Do has improved little by little, but it's still not all that impressive.Īs with so much of Microsoft's software, To-Do will probably continue to grow slowly, lagging behind competitors in core features but increasing its connectivity with other Microsoft apps all the time. It came out of the gate weak, missing many key features found in the best to-do list apps. That app first appeared in 2017, and in its short lifespan, it hasn't done anything wildly impressive. Meanwhile, Microsoft has promised to keep Wunderlist alive until it has incorporated all the best features from it, as well as requested features, into an app that will one day replace it, called Microsoft To-Do. In short, you can keep using Wunderlist without any worries about security, but you won't see anything brand-spanking new in it. That explains why Wunderlist still gets the occasional app update. Microsoft is, however, continuing to support Wunderlist in terms of providing security fixes to anyone who still uses it. Since Microsoft's 2015 acquisition of it and announcement to pull the plug on the app, the company is no longer building new features or enhancements. Here's the full scoop on what's happening with Wunderlist. They both offer more than pretty much any other to-do app on the market. I like Todoist better for personal tasks and Asana for business and teamwork, but explore them for yourself. If you don't already have one, I recommend you instead consider an Editors' Choice to-do app, namely Todoist Premium or Asana. Allow me to cut to the chase and say if you already have a Wunderlist account, there's no reason to panic just yet. 12/10/2023 0 Comments Seagate backup plus desktopBattle-tested across industries by millions of users, PromiseRAID in particular leverages the Predictive Data Migration (PDM) feature to deliver unparalleled reliability - the company's promise - and keep hard-won creative work safe from disk failure while maximizing performance, particularly effective on high-capacity, multi-drive systems. 12/10/2023 0 Comments Barry schwartz bioHowever, having more options works only to a certain extent, after which it is detrimental to your health and happiness, and this is the part you need to understand. After all, how would it be possible having more choice doesn’t mean more freedom?Īs implied above, more choice is better than no choice at all. You may think that this is quite counterintuitive. That is why you bought that bottle of Coca-Cola almost two hours after going inside the supermarket to buy some new, exotic drink! You were free to buy anything you wanted, but you bought the thing that you buy every time you want to refresh yourself. In short: “many options” equals to “a lot of thinking” equals to “no action.” Analysis paralysis means that, by facing an abundance of choices, you’re locked in a state of overthinking, which might lead to a situation where you can’t make your choice at all. It rhymes, but let’s face it – no phrase that includes the word “paralysis” in it is a positive one. In other words, more alternatives do mean more freedom, until it evolves into a state of overchoice, when it leads to confusion, anxiety, and stress. Now, what if we told you that it is for your own good? That’s the starting point of “The Paradox of Choice.” Throughout the book, Schwartz suggests that we are wrong to equate choice with freedom because the equation works only to some extent. Time for a worldwide #QuitNetflix Twitter campaign, right? Imagine how you’d react if someone told you that, starting from tomorrow, you’ll be able to stream only half of the films you can today. Even though considered a social problem, you are still able to do something about it. Some people call this problem “choice overload.”Īlthough that is not precisely the technical term for it, let Schwartz tell you the one that will make you the smart guy in your office. In a nutshell, Schwartz says it is not your fault, biology and society are to blame. If you have ever gone to a supermarket to buy some new, exotic drink and ended up buying a bottle of Coca-Cola about an hour and a half later, you can already guess what this book is about. Written by Barry Schwartz – an esteemed American psychologist and professor of Social Theory and Social Action at Swarthmore College – “The Paradox of Choice” tries to explain the reasons behind this problem and also tries to give a few practical pieces of advice on how to overcome it. Yet, there’s almost no person on this planet that hasn’t felt paralyzed by their own inability to choose between several proposed options. And we’ve grown accustomed to believe that having choice is equal to freedom. 12/10/2023 0 Comments Crown copy and paste emojiSelect “Copy” to copy the crown to the clipboard.Choose one of the crown pictures and press Select to add it to the Characters To Copy box.Check Advanced View to enlarge the menu if you can’t see the box.Crown icons are associated with chess pieces, thus enter “chess” into the Search For box.
